Signs of the Times
2021
public installation with reflective vinyl signage panels
Signs of the Times is a site-specific intervention that incorporates reflective signage panels that are placed across and around the Ledra Palace’s crossing points. The signs are present as flawed statues, void of meaning. Naturally, in normal communication, between one human being and another, for purposes connected with everyday life, such misunderstandings are few; the codes are established in advance. But there are further possible chances, and the first to be challenged amongst them is that of communication. According to Umberto Eco, if in communication ambiguity is excluded, in artistic communication it is deliberate; and in mass communication ambiguity, even if ignored, is always present. The message in this ongoing research project is deliberately ambiguous precisely to foster the use of different codes by those who, in different times and places, encounter the work’s mapping relations.
This project was implemented at Ledra Palace’s UN Buffer Zone in Nicosia, Cyprus and it's part of the artists residency Social Sculptures BEUYS100 by Goethe Institut Zypern and curated by Marina Christodoulidou
