COMMUNITY ART
16, 17 and 24 of September 2023
Neighborhoods of Larnaka
On the weekend of September 16th and 17th, in neighborhood parks, participants will have the opportunity to create musical compositions, using recyclable percussion instruments under the guidance of musicians Maria Kramvi and Andreas Georgiou and make their own clay sculptures under the guidance of artist Eirene Constantinou. Based on the sounds, the sculptures and stories, we will create a collective work, which will be exhibited on September 24th in Zouchouri Square. The action in each neighborhood concludes with a neighborhood “symposium”, where we will share snacks and drinks to get to know each other better. The action in each neighborhood lasts two hours. Drumming Up Art & Hope culminates on September 24, from 17:00 to 18:00 in Zouhouri, where all the groups and neighborhoods will meet, uniting their works in a common musical event and a common exhibition.

Drumming up Art and Hope is part of mahaLάrt, a new cultural institution that Larnaca 2030 is introducing into the city’s cultural events. With inclusivity as its central value, mahaLάrt draws attention to the city’s neighborhoods, especially the less enlightened ones, those on the fringes of social and artistic happenings, and to all the people who live in them. The actions seek to illuminate invisible aspects of the city’s everyday life and give voice and visibility to all the communities of Larnaca. In this way, they promote and serve the great cause of cultural democracy, treating art as a public good that is equally distributed among citizens. At mahaLάrt, the human geography of Larnaca functions as the raw material of artistic creation, putting into practice the concept of co-creating, where art is co-created with people for people, not only in the city center but also in its periphery.
