WHAT'S EVOHK
ABOUT
EVOHK/evoke: become the cause, to bring or recall
(a feeling, a sound or an image) to the conscious mind
THE MISSION
EVOHK is an artist-run space at the center of Larnaca’s Old Town. We are dedicated to the facilitation and production of creative projects that explore a wide spectrum of artistic practices. We approach collective creativity as a way of encouraging experimentation and collaboration between artists, curators, organisations and institutions.
EVOHK is a social initiative that aims to make art accessible for everyone and expose its ability to challenge perceptions, inspire, and transform oneself and society as a whole.
THE STORY
It was founded in 2020 by the artist Eirene Constantinou, who wanted to create a greenhouse for artists, a safe and inclusive environment where creativity is a key tool for growth, discovery and connection within the community. This space was formerly used as a neon light & sign-writing workshop since 1974 by her father, the sign-maker from Ammochostos, Makis Constantinou (Atelie Makis).
It functions as a multi-space for exhibitions, performances, workshops and also extends its functions to increase access and inventive interaction with contemporary art and design in public spaces, historical sites and rural areas of the island of Cyprus.
THE LOCATION
Our space is located on the intersection of Larnaca’s Old Town, Phinikoudes Avenue, the Medieval Castle and the Church of Saint Lazarus. A traditional two-floor building with internal arches and wooden shutters, including an exhibition space approximately 5 meters wide and 10 meters deep, carefully renovated to sustain the architectural character of the local area.
